Visual Storytelling Informed by Effective Strategy
Video is a very powerful communications and storytelling tool, especially when used strategically with social media. With its combination of moving visuals, audio/music, graphics and text, video can quickly create an emotional connection with audiences. It can help put a human face on important issues in ways that text, photos, statistics or factual arguments alone cannot.
When viewers connect with and care about the stories and storytellers you present on-screen, they are more likely to engage with your campaign or specific organizing goals. Effective video can help drive increases in subscriptions, membership, event turnout, online petition sign-ons, volunteer activism, electoral turnout, messages sent to electeds, donations and more.
We aim to produce videos that reach who you are trying to reach, deepen engagement of key audiences with your organization or campaign, and move the ball forward in concrete, measurable ways.
We do so in part by asking — and helping to answer! — the following questions:
- Why do you want to create this particular video? How does it fit into your overall goals?
- Who are you trying to reach? What do you already know about this audience (or audiences?)
- How can we most effectively reach them?
- How will we KNOW if we have reached them? How will we measure that, either qualitatively, quantitatively or both?
- What would you like people to do, ideally, after viewing your video? Is there a concrete ask or action?
- How will we measure conversion of video views, likes or shares (i.e. online engagement) into action that supports concrete campaign or organizational goals?
- What is success? If your video, or series of videos is effective, what do you hope will have changed or be different or better than before you produced them?
Answering such questions not only helps make your videos be more effective and impactful, it also makes the production process more efficient.
